Case Study: Enterprise Structured Cabling & Backbone Infrastructure Deployment in New Jersey, USA

  • Feb 26
  • 3 min read

Project Summary

Protek Systems recently completed a full enterprise-grade structured cabling and backbone infrastructure deployment for a large multi-unit commercial facility in Runnemede, New Jersey. The project covered MDF and IDF environments, warehouse and office spaces, external security systems, and carrier demarcation, delivering a highly resilient, standards-compliant network built for scale, performance, and long-term operational reliability.

The installation was designed to support high-density connectivity, advanced security systems, wireless coverage, and future expansion, while maintaining strict cable management, grounding, and documentation standards throughout.

Technical Scope & Design Approach - Enterprise Structured Cabling & Backbone Infrastructure Deployment in New Jersey, USA

Main Distribution Frame (MDF) & Rack Infrastructure

The MDF was designed as the central aggregation point for copper, fiber, security, and wireless systems. Protek Systems supplied and installed:

  • 45RU Panduit 4-post open racks with front and rear vertical cable management

  • High-capacity horizontal managers and slack spool systems to maintain bend-radius compliance

  • Rack-mounted shelving and PDU mounting kits

  • Red and blue intelligent Raritan PDUs for power segmentation and resilience

  • Full rack grounding via busbar strips bonded to the facility clean earth

Wire basket containment was installed using radius fittings, trapeze supports, and wall terminations to ensure structured routing, airflow optimisation, and future cable add capacity.

Backbone Infrastructure (MDF, IDF & MPOE)

A resilient backbone architecture was implemented to interconnect:

  • MDF to IDF

  • MDF to MPOE (carrier handoff)

Key elements included:

  • Armoured OS2 singlemode indoor/outdoor fiber for long-term durability

  • Corning rack-mount enclosures and splice cassettes for clean fiber termination

  • 24-strand fiber capacity to allow immediate use with future headroom

  • Cat6A copper backbone links between distribution frames

  • Pivoting strain relief bars and disciplined patching for serviceability

This design supports high-throughput applications while ensuring clean separation between backbone, horizontal, and carrier infrastructure.

Horizontal Cabling Deployment

All horizontal cabling was installed using plenum-rated Category 6A to exceed performance requirements and ensure regulatory compliance throughout office and warehouse spaces.

The deployment supported:

  • Office workstations (single, dual, quad data outlets)

  • Video conferencing locations with multi-cable terminations

  • Warehouse desk-level data points

  • Storage cage connectivity

  • Wireless access point locations

  • Extensive internal and external security camera and intercom coverage

Installations were a mix of flush-mounted and surface-mounted solutions, selected based on environment, usage, and future flexibility.

Patch Panels, Patching & Cable Management

Protek Systems installed and dressed:

  • Multiple 48-port flat patch panels

  • Colour-coded Cat6A patching for logical segregation

  • Correct-length patch cords at both rack and work area

  • Spare patch capacity for future growth

All racks and panels were labelled to a consistent scheme, ensuring ease of fault-finding, changes, and future audits.

Integration & Ancillary Works

In addition to cabling, Protek Systems provided:

  • Installation of customer-supplied wireless access points

  • Rack-and-stack services for active equipment

  • End-to-end testing and certification of all copper links

  • Comprehensive as-built documentation and test result delivery

Quality, Compliance & Best Practice

Throughout the project, Protek Systems adhered to:

  • ANSI/TIA structured cabling standards

  • Manufacturer installation best practices

  • Bend radius, separation, and containment requirements

  • Proper grounding and bonding methodology

  • Clear documentation and traceability

Every element was installed with maintainability, performance, and longevity as core design principles.

Outcome

The completed infrastructure delivers:

  • A high-performance, enterprise-ready network foundation

  • Clean, scalable MDF and IDF environments

  • Reliable backbone connectivity between units and carrier entry

  • Robust support for wireless, security, and future technologies

The facility is now equipped with a structured cabling system capable of supporting business growth, technology refresh cycles, and evolving operational demands.
